Diary of a Teacher: I Thought Only Actors Were Given Scripts…

Today I was told that I would be using a computer program to teach my children how to read. They will put headphones on their ears. They will listen to everything being read to them as they follow along. They will make keyboard clicks to navigate through the program and answer questions. Consequently, the program will leave me with an assessment of what they know, what they don’t know, and how I” can help them. Oh, and one more thing–the how I can help them part is scripted.

I will read the script that “The Groupinator” has fashioned for the groups that “The Groupinator” has formed.

I wonder if “The Groupinator” will write my lesson plans…hmmm. I’ll have to look into that…food for thought…

I also learned…this is not optional.

Every student will follow this program.

Every student will spend a minimum of twenty minutes a day on the program.

One more thing…

I have 7 computers in my class of 20 students.

…only three of those computers work.

OH my goodness.. That is about as bad as your door not being able to lock.. Maybe I should call someone to get you some computers? Do they have a computer lab class? Shouldn’t they do this in that class?

They do Amy and you would think that would work but that lab is for specials which my children only go to once every three weeks and it is only mon wed fri. I have also tried to squeeze my class in at various times throughout the day but working around other grade levels specials and teachers trying to do the same thing leaves you with one here or there. I am also working around my math schedule, lunch, the teachers that come in to work with my speds (2 at two diff times) as well as my groups that gets pulled out for accelerated math and then two students that get pulled for speech two days a week.
